My favorite character is not from a book, nor from a movie but an American TV drama show called Supernatural. He is the one of the two main character of the show and his name is Dean Winchester. In the drama, Dean and his brother Sam, travel all around the country to investigate supernatural happenings and to save people from the paranormal.
Mary and John Winchester were their parents. John Winchester was a mechanic when he met Mary and fell in love with her. Eventually they got married. What John did not know was Mary's family were hunters, people who specialize in dealing with supernatural activities. They dated for quite a while before John gathered the courage to propose to Mary in a diner. Just when Mary was about to accept, the demon Azazel appeared. John tried to protect Mary and fight the demon only to get his neck snapped. Seeing this, Mary made a deal with Azazel to bring John back into life, and agreed to let Azazel into their house 10 years later for some unknown reason. John Winchester returned to life without memories of getting killed. After getting married, Mary retired from hunting and both led a peaceful life, having Dean and Sam.
When Sam was 6 months old, Mary was killed cruelly by Azazel. It all happened one night when Mary went into Sam's bedroom and caught Azazel feeding his blood to Sam, confronting him only to be pinned onto the ceiling and set ablaze. John Winchester was able to carry both sons out of the house in safety but was helpless as he could not save his wife.
After this incident, John became very determined to find out more about the killer. His obsessions caused his relationship between him and his sons to become very thin as he often left home early and came back very late. It was then John found out about the supernatural and became a hunter. Dean followed his father and became a hunter while Sam went to university but eventually became a hunter.
The reason Dean is my favorite character is because, unlike Sam whose characteristics changes through the drama ( from a kind person who think twice before acting and does not kill, preferring to come to a win-win solution to a cold blooded killer who kills to protect his family and friends ), Dean retains his devil-may-care attitude throughout. He feels that he has a responsibility to protect his brother after what happened when he was an infant. Dean does not care about the whole good or evil thing and never kill any supernatural beings who surrenders unless he had to whereas Sam thinks that anything supernatural is evil and should be killed or there would be more harm done. Throughout the show, Dean learned from his mistakes. He learnt that death cannot be cheated and it would cause a major catastrophe if he tries to cheat death. Sam on the other hand, refuses to acknowledge that people cannot cheat death and keep trying to save his brother when Dean was about to die, even going as far as making a deal with the devil.
Dean has excellent combat skills and could kill anything with what he has, a letter opener, a knife and even his fist. He could hold off a horde of vampire with only a flask of holy water. After a brief stint working as the assistant of a demon in hell, Dean learnt how to inflict maximum pain on a victim to interrogate him/her without killing him/her.
I feel that Dean Winchester and I have a lot in common. We care for our families and fight not for the wrong reasons. In life, we all make mistakes, and like Dean Winchester, we learn from them.
